The inaugural CSF Hub Cup took place at the UEA Sportspark, Norwich on Wednesday with Open Academy taking home the trophy.

Competitors from four CSF Hubs, as part of the Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) programme, played a variety of sports, including handball, rush hockey, netball, badminton, table tennis and basketball.

North Walsham High School, Northgate High School, Lynn Grove High School and the winners, Open Academy, all took part in the tournament giving many of the students their first taste of competitive action.

Partaking in the sports earned the Hubs points and the Hub with the most points at the end of the event was declared Hub Cup champions.

British Basketball League star Patrick Manifold, enjoying a summer break back in his native Norfolk, attended the event to deliver a warm-up session and offer words of encouragement to the young basketball competitors.

Patrick was accompanied by fellow basketball star Taner Adu, representing British Basketball, and Jenny Day, Norfolk Netball Development Officer for England Netball. All three guests were on hand to give out medals to each of the participants.

Jenny Day said: “It’s been a great opportunity for young people to engage in new sports. Hopefully it’ll encourage students to go on and join a local club.”

The teams were chosen from participants at PL4S sessions which were hosted after school by the Community Sports Foundation for the past 30 weeks.

Tom Weal, CSF Sports Development Officer, said: “It was fantastic to see so many students from the PL4S sessions attend the Cup and put what they’ve learnt across the year into practice. It’s been a great finale to this year’s programme”

Students from the victorious Open Academy will now get the chance to attend the pre-season friendly between Norwich City and Celta Vigo at Carrow Road.

The Hub Cup was created to celebrate the successes of the Premier League 4 Sport programme as well as giving participants the opportunity to bond as a team.

The Premier League 4 Sport initiative was set up in 2009 to follow the Olympic Legacy and has seen great success on a national scale, helping tens of thousands of young people get involved in sport in their local community.
