Canary Cup 2024

Last week was a busy one at The Nest – representative CCO teams from across the country arrived at the venue for four days of footballing fun at the 2024 Canary Cup, sponsored by MH Goals.

Day 1 saw the U11 and U12 sides take to the pitches, with a long day of competitive football in the sunshine eventually resulting in Watford clinching victory in the U11 cup-game and Shrewsbury prevailing in an entertaining U12 final.

A sunny second day at at The Nest once again provided no shortage of entertainment for the watching friends and family, as the U9s and U13s made the most of both the 3G and grass pitches at venue. A penalty shootout victory for QPR in the U13 semi-final saw them set up a tie agains the Russell Martin Foundation, with the latter going on to lift the silverware after a 2-0 victory.

Our very own Norwich City U9 side came close to securing victory in their final, but it was Brighton & Hove Albion who ultimately ended up getting their hands on the trophy.

The next day saw a fresh new wave of aspiring footballers pull on their boots, this time competing in the U10 and U14 age groups. A repeat of the second day’s U9 final, hosts Norwich once again came face to face with Brighton in the U10 final, this time securing a well deserved victory. Brighton weren’t trophyless on day 3 though – their U14 side proved too much for local side Kings Lynn in their respective final.

The final day of 2024’s Canary Cup had a slightly different format – five representative teams all took part in the a day of pan-disability tournament football. Children of varying  disabilities made up each 5-a-side team, with Wolves, Norwich, Aston Villa and Manchester United all represented. After a series of group stage fixtures and two close-run semi-finals, it was Norwich taking on Wolves in the final, with our very own Canaries emerging as winners.

Everyone at the Foundation would like to thank everyone who turned up and participated in the week’s festivities – it was a fantastic four days at The Nest.
